Goffin defeats qualifier Arnaldi in straight sets; reaches last eight at Swiss Indoors Basel
Goffin won 6-2, 7-6(7) to set up a quarterfinal clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime.
David Goffin continued his impressive form as he defeated qualifier Antoine Arnaldi in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Wednesday.
The Belgian wildcard needed just over 90 minutes to overcome the Frenchman 6-2, 7-6(7) and book his place in the last eight, where he will face fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Goffin, a former world No. 7, is now 5-0 in Basel this week, having won two qualifying matches before reaching the main draw. He is bidding for his fourth ATP Tour title of the season, having previously triumphed in Marrakech, Lyon and Metz.
Arnaldi, ranked 260th in the world, was making his ATP Tour main draw debut this week. He had upset sixth seed Lorenzo Sonego in the first round, but could not repeat the feat against Goffin.
Goffin will now face Auger-Aliassime, who reached the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Emil Ruusuvuori. The Canadian, who is seeded fourth in Basel, has won 44 matches on the ATP Tour this season, more than any other player.
