Deputies voted to rename Gagarin Park in Zaporizhzhia
The decision was made at a session of the Zaporizhzhia City Council on Thursday, September 15.
The park will now be called "Park of Memory and Reconciliation".
The decision to rename the park was made by a majority vote of the deputies. The new name was proposed by the city's mayor, Volodymyr Buriak, who said that it would "symbolize the city's commitment to peace and reconciliation".
The park was originally named after Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who was the first person to travel into space. However, in recent years, there have been growing calls to rename the park, as Gagarin is seen by some as a symbol of Soviet imperialism.
The decision to rename the park has been met with mixed reactions. Some residents have welcomed the change, saying that it is a sign that the city is moving away from its Soviet past. Others have opposed the change, saying that it is an attempt to erase history.
The renaming of Gagarin Park is part of a larger trend in Ukraine to remove Soviet-era symbols from public spaces. In recent years, a number of streets, squares, and monuments have been renamed to reflect the country's new national identity.
