In Zaporizhzhia, the park named after Soviet cosmonaut Gagarin was renamed into the park of twin cities
The decision was supported by 65 deputies out of 66
On July 7, 2022, the Zaporizhzhia City Council considered and approved the initiative to rename the Gagarin Park into the Park of twin cities. The decision of the deputies clearly falls in line with the Law of Ukraine on decommunization of 2015. The issue of renaming was initiated by the residents of the city, who had brought a relevant petition to the deputies.
According to the mayor of Zaporizhzhia, Anatoliy Kurtev, the decision to rename the park was made unanimously
The full support of the decision by the deputies is clear evidence of their unambiguous position on issues of decommunization, which is an important part of Ukrainian identity. The Park of Twin Cities will become a symbol of unity and cooperation with other cities, as well as a space that will promote the preservation of the historical heritage and memorialization of important events for the city.
The renaming process will take some time and will require a number of legal procedures
After the renaming, the park will receive new signs, plates, and other elements of identification. In addition, the authorities plan to carry out a number of landscaping works and infrastructure improvements to create new quality space for the residents and guests of the city.
