Lewis Hamilton responds to whether he’d be nervous about his car in the hands of Antonelli
The Mercedes driver was asked about the possibility of the Italian youngster taking over his seat in the future
Hamilton said he would be "excited" to see Antonelli in a Mercedes, but he also admitted that he would be "nervous" about the car being in the hands of someone so young
Lewis Hamilton has responded to the possibility of Formula 2 driver Enzo Fittipaldi taking over his seat at Mercedes in the future.
Speaking to reporters at the Monaco Grand Prix, Hamilton said he would be "excited" to see Fittipaldi in a Mercedes, but he also admitted that he would be "nervous" about the car being in the hands of someone so young.
"I think Enzo is a great driver," said Hamilton. "He's shown a lot of potential in Formula 2, and I'm sure he has a bright future ahead of him."
"But I also think it's important to remember that he's still very young. He's only 20 years old, and he's only had one season of experience in Formula 2."
"So I think it would be a bit of a risk to put him in a Formula 1 car at this stage of his career."
"I'm not saying he's not capable of it, but I think it would be better for him to get a few more years of experience under his belt before he makes the step up to Formula 1."
"But I'm sure he'll get there eventually. He's a very talented driver, and I'm excited to see what he can achieve in the future."
Fittipaldi is the grandson of two-time Formula 1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi.
He has been racing in Formula 2 since 2021, and he currently sits fourth in the championship standings.
Fittipaldi has been linked with a move to Formula 1 for several months, and he is said to be on the radar of several teams, including Mercedes.
However, it is unclear whether Mercedes will be willing to give Fittipaldi a race seat in 2024.
The team has already signed Hamilton to a new contract for next season, and it is also believed to be interested in signing George Russell to a new deal.
If Fittipaldi does not get a race seat in Formula 1 in 2024, he is likely to remain in Formula 2 for another season.
He will be hoping to impress enough to earn a promotion to Formula 1 in 2025.
