Thuram scores twice as Gladbach boosts European hopes
M'Gladbach moved up to seventh in the standings with the victory, while Mainz dropped to 11th.
Marcus Thuram scored twice as Borussia Monchengladbach came from behind to beat Mainz 2-1 in the Bundesliga on Tuesday and boost their hopes of European football next season.
Mainz took the lead through Leandro Barreiro in the 20th minute, but Thuram equalised just before the break and then grabbed the winner in the 73rd minute.
The victory lifted Gladbach up to seventh in the standings on 22 points, level with sixth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt and five points behind fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund.
Mainz dropped to 11th place on 19 points.
Gladbach had the better chances in the first half but fell behind when Barreiro fired home from close range after a cross from the right.
However, Thuram equalised in the 45th minute when he collected a pass from Jonas Hofmann and fired a low shot into the bottom corner.
Thuram then completed the turnaround in the 73rd minute when he latched onto a pass from Christoph Kramer and slotted the ball past Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner.
Mainz pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but Gladbach held on for the victory.
Gladbach will now look to continue their good form when they host Werder Bremen on Saturday, while Mainz will travel to Bochum on the same day.
