A Lionel Messi-inspired Inter Miami side defeated the Philadelphia Union 5-4 on penalty kicks to win their first-ever MLS Cup Saturday night at DRV PNK Stadium.
The match was an evenly-contested affair and went to extra time and then a penalty shootout. Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender’s save in the 8th shootout round sent the home crowd into raptures and was the winning stop in the shootout.
Gonzalo Higuain put Inter Miami on the board in the 6th minute. The visitors equalized in the 52nd through Daniel Gazdag. In the 58th minute, Messi put Inter Miami back in front from the penalty spot after Alejandro Bedoya fouled Higuain in the box.
The Union again tied the game in the 75th minute, as Cory Burke outmuscled a defender and poked home a cross from Julian Carranza. Miami came close to winning in regulation but could not find another goal. It was a similar story in extra time, with both sides having chances but neither converting.
In the penalty shootout, all ten outfield players scored before Callender stopped Paxten Aaronson’s attempt. Miami converted its next kick via Damion Lowe to claim the trophy.
Messi was named Man of the Match. It was the second 2023 MLS Cup for the Argentine, who also won the title with Atlanta United in 2018.
The victory is a landmark moment for Inter Miami, who joined the league in 2020. It is also a triumph for manager Phil Neville, who has been with the team since 2021.
The MLS Cup is the latest piece of silverware for Messi, whose illustrious career includes seven Ballon d’Or awards and four UEFA Champions League titles.
