Novosibirsk Zoo Names Far Eastern Leopard Cub
Zookeepers in western Siberia have named the first Far Eastern leopard cub born in captivity in Russia this year.
The healthy male cub was born on April 16 to parents Leo and Leia at the Novosibirsk Zoo. He has been named Bars, which means "snow leopard" in Russian.
Bars is the first Far Eastern leopard cub to be born in Russia since 2019. The subspecies is critically endangered, with only around 84 individuals remaining in the wild.
The Novosibirsk Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world that breeds Far Eastern leopards. The zoo has a long history of success in breeding the animals, and has helped to reintroduce them to the wild.
The birth of Bars is a major boost for the conservation of Far Eastern leopards. The cub is a healthy and playful addition to the zoo's leopard family, and he is expected to grow up to be a strong and healthy adult.
The zoo is now working to raise funds to build a new enclosure for Bars and his family. The new enclosure will be larger and more natural, and it will provide the leopards with more space to roam and play.
The Novosibirsk Zoo is committed to the conservation of Far Eastern leopards. The zoo's breeding program is an important part of the effort to save this critically endangered subspecies.
