Russian prison escapees detained

Two convicts who escaped from a prison in Lipetsk Oblast, Russia, have been detained

The escapees, Alexander Alexandrov and Alexei Semyonov, were serving sentences for murder and robbery, respectively

On July 22, 2023, Alexandrov and Semyonov escaped from Correctional Colony No. 2 in Gryazi, Lipetsk Oblast. The two men cut through a fence and fled into the surrounding woods.

A large-scale manhunt was launched, involving police, the National Guard, and volunteers. The escapees were eventually detained on July 24, 2023, in the village of Verkhnyaya Matrenka, Lipetsk Oblast.

The escapees were unarmed at the time of their detention. They have been returned to Correctional Colony No. 2 and will face additional charges for their escape.

The Russian prison system has been plagued by escapes in recent years. In 2022, there were over 100 escapes from Russian prisons. The majority of these escapes were from low-security prisons.

The Russian government has taken steps to improve security at its prisons. However, the problem of prison escapes persists.
