Six inmates escape from Lipetsk Correctional Colony-2 through an underground tunnel
Lipetsk, Russia -
Six inmates escaped from Lipetsk Correctional Colony-2 through an underground tunnel on August 12, 2023. The escape was discovered during a morning roll call when the six inmates were not present. A search of the prison grounds revealed an underground tunnel that led outside the prison walls. The tunnel was approximately 100 feet long and 5 feet wide and had been dug over the course of several months. The inmates used tools that they had stolen from the prison workshop to dig the tunnel. The escape is the latest in a string of high-profile prison escapes in Russia in recent years. In 2021, nine inmates escaped from a prison in Pskov Oblast through a hole in the prison wall. In 2020, four inmates escaped from a prison in Bryansk Oblast through a tunnel that they had dug under the prison fence. The Russian prison system is notoriously overcrowded and underfunded, and escapes are a common occurrence.
The six inmates who escaped from Lipetsk Correctional Colony-2 have not yet been apprehended. The authorities are conducting a search for the escapees and have asked the public for assistance in locating them. The inmates are considered to be dangerous and should not be approached if they are seen. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the escapees is asked to contact the police.
