The Day of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God: What Can and Cannot Be Done on October 26
History of the Holiday
The Day of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God is celebrated on October 26 (November 8 according to the New Calendar). The holiday is dedicated to the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, which, according to legend, was painted by the holy Apostle Luke during the life of the Virgin Mary. The icon got its name from the Iveron Monastery on Mount Athos, where it was kept for many years. In the 10th century, the icon was miraculously transferred from Nicaea to Mount Athos. The ship on which the icon was being transported was caught in a storm, and the sailors began to pray to the Mother of God for salvation. Suddenly, the storm subsided, and the icon appeared on the shore of Mount Athos. The monks of the Iveron Monastery took the icon and placed it in the monastery church.
The Iveron Icon of the Mother of God is considered one of the most revered icons in the Orthodox Church. She is prayed for healing from diseases, help in difficult life situations, and protection from enemies.
