The inmates escaped through a hole in the prison fence. They were wearing prison uniforms and armed with knives. A manhunt is underway, and authorities are asking for the public's help in locating the escapees.
The escape is the first from a maximum-security penal colony in Russia in over a decade
The escape is the first from a maximum-security penal colony in Russia in over a decade. The last escape from a maximum-security penal colony in Russia was in 2011, when two inmates escaped from a prison in Rostov-on-Don.
The escape from the Lipetsk colony is a major embarrassment for the Russian prison system. The prison is one of the most secure in Russia, and the escapees are all dangerous criminals.
